Keren Morris tells how she came to join the BALANCE 'team'.

My name is Keren and I am the In-House Technical Advisor here at BALANCE. I joined the team in March 2009. Here’s a little about me and my equestrian background...

Having spent my entire childhood dreaming of horses and volunteering at a nearby riding school at every single opportunity, I was desperate to start working with horses as soon as I possibly could. Initially, unaware of other possibilities, I began training and got my BHSAI Qualification. Although I was so keen to learn, as time went on I started to notice that things weren’t quite right. However, I was a very respectful student and didn’t presume to question things at that stage, so carried on regardless.

Once I’d been teaching for a while though, it became impossible to ignore the fact that although I knew I was helping horses and riders to some degree, there was so much that was just not right. If only I could work out what was wrong!

Some time later, a Parelli DVD came free with a horsey magazine and I was filled with bubbles of delight as hope was raised that I had found the information I’d been searching for. Over the next few years I studied various forms of natural horsemanship.

There is no doubt that I gained some incredibly valuable ‘tools’ to add to my ‘tool box’, but my heart gradually sank again as the familiar feeling returned. There were huge gaps and contradictions in the natural horsemanship training methods, and also in my own knowledge.

I had such a strong sense of it, yet everywhere I looked I saw the same thing. Everyone seemed to be missing vital information. It just seemed that perhaps I was more aware of it than others seemed to be.

Another approach I found myself taking was natural healing. I trained and qualified as a Reiki Master Teacher. I can’t tell you what an awesome experience that has been. As a result of learning to tune into myself so much better, I discovered that I could communicate with horses on a whole new level. Better still, I could help others to do the same.

I discovered that human beings are far more incredible than I had ever imagined. We can heal with our hands, we can sense things as I’d only ever seen people do in fantasy films and we actually manipulate the Universe with every breath we take.

My ability to help horses and dedicated owners advanced immeasurably. Gradually, through increased awareness I started to understand that the main knowledge I was missing related to the physicality of ridden horses. When the horse wasn’t being ridden I could offer so much in terms of mental, emotional and physical help and could also help to facilitate the development and strengthening of the bond, connection, understanding and communication between horse and owner, but once the horse was ridden, I hit a brick wall again.

Years more searching finally led me to Carol Brett. I am not exaggerating when I say that it was one of the greatest days of my life. Since the early days I had become extremely cautious about exactly what information I was happy to accept and I refused to embrace anything that didn’t feel right to me. Yet when I met Carol I felt I could drop my guard completely and just absorb everything she offered.

I am excited every day to work as part of the BALANCE team and cannot express how grateful I am to Carol and Lesley for sharing their incredible knowledge so freely and precisely. I can say without any doubt that I work with two of the greatest equestrian mentors to be found anywhere in the world. I am grateful for them every day and the horses who’s lives I have touched have been equally relieved and grateful.
